5 dependable dishwashers for $ 400 or less
For some of us, the extra benefits of paying the average $ 1,200 price for one of the dishwashers recommended by Consumer Reports aren’t worth the extra money. What you get by paying more—lots of flexibility, quiet running, a stainless tub, and shorter cycles—doesn’t matter if you can’t afford more than, say, $ 400. With this in mind, here are a handful of dishwashers that aren’t perfect—they all lack a stainless interior and an adjustable upper rack— but they’ll get your … (read more)
How manufacturers make dishwashers so quiet
Shop for a low-cost dishwasher today, and the model you choose will probably have a filter—the component in the bottom of the tub that catches food bits so they won’t adhere to clean dishes. The filter cleans itself. But pay $ 700 or more, and you’ll have to periodically clean the filter yourself. Why pay more to do extra maintenance? There’s a very good reason.
Self-cleaning filters don’t need your attention because they have a grinder, often called a macerator, which pulverizes the … (read more)
GE dishwasher’s bottle-washing jets speed cleaning
Baby bottles that rolled under the car’s back seat, energy-drink bottles left in a gym bag over the weekend, and other artifacts from our busy lifestyles are the obvious inspiration for a new feature found in some GE dishwashers. In the top rack of select models, you can put containers with small openings, such as baby and sports bottles and other tall, narrow items, over four upright jets positioned on the right side. In our past surveys, LG has been one of the more repair-prone of the 10 dishwasher brands for which … (read more)

Dishwashers so quiet you barely hear them running
Noisy dishwashers aren’t a bother if your kitchen is separated from the rest of your living area. But that isn’t the case with most homes today where open plans are the preferred configuration. That’s why dishwasher manufacturers put a premium on quietness, a feature they tout loudly in their ads. At Consumer Reports we put two newly tested dishwashers side-by-side and recorded the noise. One washed with a whisper but the other was like that boring dinner guest who drones on … (read more)
’30 Rock’ ends with a big idea: Transparent dishwashers
At the end of last night’s “30 Rock” finale, ex-network exec Jack Donaghy is about to set sail around the world when he has a brainstorm: “Clear dishwashers! You can see what’s going on inside! It’s the best idea I’ve ever had. Thank God I took that boat trip.” Jack may be onto something. In Consumer Reports labs we’ve noticed that the windows on kitchen and laundry appliances are getting bigger and bigger and one of our top-rated toasters has … (read more)

Adjustable racks and loading aids
Racks that adjust up or down, adjustable tines, and silverware and stemware holders let you reconfigure the interior and organize the contents. Those devices increase flexibility, especially when you cook for a crowd, and they can help accommodate large and oddly shaped items.
